Pet transport regulations may be updated over time. Before traveling, always confirm the current conditions directly on the official Renfe website.
What has changed
Renfe has expanded its conditions to also allow larger dogs to travel by train, beyond the traditional 10 kg carrier limit that existed until now. This opens the door to traveling by train with dogs that were previously excluded due to weight, provided a series of requirements are met.
General requirements
- Specific weight limit depending on the service (check the current limit before booking).
- Use of a muzzle during access, boarding, and disembarking at the station and on the train.
- Short leash throughout the journey.
- Advance booking of the dog's seat, subject to availability.
Please note that this expanded service usually excludes dogs classified as Potentially Dangerous (PPP), which are subject to their specific regulations instead of these new conditions for large dogs. If your dog is a PPP, consult Renfe directly for the applicable conditions in your specific case.
How to prepare your dog for the trip
- Practice wearing the muzzle at home before the trip, in short and positive sessions, so that the first time does not coincide with the stress of a busy station.
- Familiarize your dog with noisy and crowded spaces before the day of the trip, if they are not used to it.
- Bring water and, if the journey is long, something with which they can rest comfortably.
- Arrive with plenty of time for boarding, avoiding last-minute rushes.
What muzzle to choose if your dog has never worn one
For occasional use such as boarding a train, a light and breathable basket muzzle is the most comfortable option: it allows normal panting, which is important in an environment that can already generate some nervousness. We are incorporating muzzles specifically designed for this type of occasional use into our catalog. If you are traveling soon and want to be prepared, write to us and we will let you know as soon as they are available.
