This content is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for a veterinarian's assessment. If you suspect heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Warning Signs
- Very intense panting that does not decrease after several minutes of rest in the shade
- Gums that are very red or, in more severe cases, pale or bluish
- Clumsy steps, disorientation, or difficulty maintaining balance
- Excessive drooling
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- In severe cases, collapse or loss of consciousness
Any dog can suffer from heatstroke, but some factors increase the risk: brachycephalic dogs (with short snouts), dogs with dark or dense fur, puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs, or simply intense physical activity during hot hours.
What to do in case of heatstroke
- Remove the dog from the heat immediately, seek shade or a cool place.
- Wet the dog with lukewarm water (not cold suddenly, to avoid thermal shock), especially on the neck, armpits, and abdomen.
- Offer fresh water if the dog is conscious and can drink on its own, without forcing it.
- Contact a veterinarian immediately, even if the dog seems to recover: the internal consequences of heatstroke may not be visible to the naked eye.
How to prevent it during walks
- Avoid the middle of the day during hot weather; go out very early or at sunset.
- Check the temperature of the asphalt with the back of your hand before going out: if you can't hold it for 5 seconds, neither can their paw pads.
- Always carry water available during the walk.
- Reduce the intensity and duration of exercise on hot days, regardless of your dog's breed or physical condition.
Equipment that helps cool your dog
Cooling garments work by evaporation: they are wet before going out, and the water, as it evaporates little by little, helps lower body temperature. It is a support, not a magic solution: real prevention is still avoiding the hottest hours. You can see our selection in the complete cooling pack (vest, protective booties, and cooling neck gaiter) or the individual Cooling Pull-on Vest.
