Running with Your Dog in Summer: Tips to Beat the Heat

Correr con tu perro en verano: consejos para no sufrir el calor

Running with your dog is one of the best ways to stay active and strengthen your bond 🏃♀️🐶. But when temperatures rise, the heat can become a challenge for both you and your adventure companion.

Krissy Moehl, running coach and outdoor ambassador, shares her experience running with her dog PD and gives us essential tips for running in summer without putting your dog at risk.

1️⃣ Hydration: first and foremost

Running in summer requires more attention to hydration. Some practical tips:

  • Carry a bladder or filter bottle to share water with your dog

  • Have a portable bowl so your dog can drink comfortably

  • Add snacks or treats to replenish energy

If your dog can carry some of their own gear, a Singletrak™ Dog Hydration Pack is ideal for long routes, but every dog is different: many prefer to receive support while you carry the gear.

2️⃣ Recommended gear for running in the heat

To protect your dog from the sun and heat, invest in cooling clothing and comfortable harnesses:

  • Swamp Cooler Zip™ Vest: helps regulate body temperature

  • Swamp Cooler™ Neck Gaiter: protects the neck and provides coolness

  • Harness Front Range® and elastic leash Roamer™ Bungee Leash: security and freedom of movement

For you: cap, breathable t-shirt, sunscreen, and enough water.

3️⃣ Snacks and post-workout recovery

After running, both you and your dog need recovery and refreshment:

  • For your dog: dog ice cream, salmon broth cubes with kibble, or a Kong with frozen peanut butter

  • For you: refreshing smoothie and some protein

A good cold water bath or a dip in a nearby river helps reduce body temperature quickly.

4️⃣ Safe summer running routes

  • Prefer paths with shade or nearby water

  • Avoid extreme heat hours (midday)

  • Make sure to carry more water if streams or lakes dry up

  • Include splash zones to cool your dog during the route

Krissy and PD take advantage of streams, lakes, and the local bay to hydrate and cool off on every outing.

5️⃣ Adapt activity to the dog

Every dog is different: some need frequent breaks, others enjoy a daily dip. The important thing is to observe signs of fatigue or overheating and adjust the intensity and duration of the run according to breed, age, and physical condition.

Enjoy your running routes safely and comfortably.
